Lighting Designers: Alex Samano & Emma Perch

Our goal behind the lighting of this show was to make it feel as uncomfortable as possible. We used our knowledge of the script and the book to help us imagine what light sources and textures the scenes would look like if they were real.  For example, we knew that Room 101 and the Ministry of Love would both be cold and bright due to sterile white lights or screens. We wanted to make them be perceived as sterilized and as if something is always watching you. In contrast, the antic backroom would be warmer to add a feeling of false comfort. Ultimately the lighting was designed to emphasize the dystopian nature of the censorship throughout the show.
